Too often, the lighting in a room is ignored during decorating makeovers. Big mistake!
Lighting, can create a mood and define a space while providing comfort and safety. Always keep in mind the four basic types of lighting:
Ambient - general, overall lighting that allows us to see and move around safely. It can come from ceiling fixtures, table lamps and floor lamps.
Task - this is directional lighting aimed at a specific task. For example, a desk lamp or a table lamp to sit and read by.
Accent - this is lighting that calls attention to a particular object, such as a track light aimed at a wall of artwork.
Decorative - mood lighting which can add character and ambiance to an area of a room, such as a chandelier over a dining room table, particularly with a dimmer switch.
Of course, function is not the only purpose of lighting. It plays a huge role in the decorative style of any room and therefore should be chosen with care.
